A seed the world is only now discovering, harvested the way it always has been.

Makhana grows beneath the still water of the ponds of north Bihar. Each season, Mithila's farming families gather the seeds by hand, just as their grandparents did.

Orvella Overseas works directly with these growers. We grade every lot for size and colour and pack it to international food-safety standards, so you get a traditional product at a consistent export grade.

From pond to pearl

Five steps, most of them by hand.

    The pond

    The seeds of the prickly water lily ripen under the still water of Mithila's shallow village ponds.

  2. 02

    The harvest

    Farmers wade into the water and gather the seeds by hand from the pond bed, one basket at a time.

  3. 03

    Sun & clean

    The seeds are washed, sun-dried and winnowed in woven baskets, then sorted by size before roasting.

  4. 04

    Roast & pop

    The seeds are roasted in iron pans over a wood fire, then struck so each kernel bursts into a light, crisp pearl.

    Grade & pack

    At Orvella every lot is graded by suta, checked by hand and packed export-ready for your market.
